The slogan “Jai Bhim”or “Jay Bhim” or “Jai Bheem” means “Victory of Bhim” was coined by Babu Hardas Laxmanrao Nagrale (Babu Hardas L.N.) in 1935. Famously known as Babu Hardas, a close follower of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, was a social worker and legislator from Nagpur who introduced this phrase as a self-respecting, unified greeting for Dalits to replace traditional salutations.
Babu Hardas was staunch follower of Dr. Ambedkar, and the secretary of Samata Sainik Dal. The slogan Jai Bhim now becomes a clarion call of the people of Dalit communities and it became the strong symbol of their cultural identity. Initially, Babu Hardas envisioned the greeting to be “Jai Bhim” reciprocated with “Bal Bhim,” but “Jai Bhim” alone became popular.
Jai Bhim is a slogan and greeting used by followers of Dr. B. R. Ambedkar, an Indian politician, first Law and Justice Minister of India and social reformer who raised voice vociferously and fought against the oppression and exploitation of the depressed communities (who were considered as untouchables in Hinduism) by the self-proclaimed upper caste Hindus.
“like the religion that teaches liberty, equality, and fraternity.”
“Untouchability is a stigma on Hinduism.”
“The touch of the untouchable is not polluting, the touch of the Brahmin is not purifying.”
Jai Bhim is also called as a slogan by some political parties like the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Republican Party of India (RPI), Azad Samaj Party. It is the slogan used by the volunteers of Bhim Army, maximum of them belongs to Dalit communities who are raising their voice against untouchability and exploitation in 21st Century on the name of caste.
‘Jai Bhim’ has become a symbol of struggle, it has become a cultural identity as well as a political identity, it also shows the relationship with the Ambedkarite movement, this utterance has become a symbol of all kinds of identities.
In 1946, during birthday celebrations for Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, for the time in the presence of Dr. Ambedkar, Jai Bhim was proclaimed by Dalit Poet Bihari Lal Harit (1913–1999) through a poem in Gandhi Ground, opposite Old Delhi Railway Station.

जय भीम का नारा लगा करे, भारत की बस्ती-बस्ती में ॥
