Brief Intro of Pulitzer Prizes
The first Pulitzer Prizes were awarded on June 4, 1917. While there are now 22 categories, the inaugural year featured a smaller group of winners across journalism and letters.
The Founder: The awards were established through a bequest by Joseph Pulitzer, the publisher of the New York World, who died in 1911. The formal announcement of the Pulitzers, made each spring, states that the awards are conferred by the president of Columbia University on the recommendation of the Pulitzer Prize Board. This formulation is derived from the Pulitzer will, which established Columbia as the seat of the administration of the prizes.

Journalism Categories
Editorial Writing:
Winner: The New York Tribune
Work: For an editorial on the first anniversary of the sinking of the Lusitania.
Reporting:
Winner: Herbert Bayard Swope (New York World)
Work: For his articles titled “Inside the German Empire,” which provided a rare look into Germany during World War I.
Letters (Literature) Categories
History:
Winners: J.J. Jusserand
Work: For his book With Americans of Past and Present Days. Interestingly, Jusserand was the French Ambassador to the United States.
Biography or Autobiography:
Winners: Laura E. Richards and Maude Howe Elliott, assisted by Florence Howe Hall
Work: For their biography Julia Ward Howe, which chronicled the life of their mother, the famous poet and abolitionist.
Important Notes on the First Year
No Fiction Prize: There was no award for the “Novel” (now Fiction) category in 1917, as the jury did not find a worthy recipient.
No Drama Prize: Similarly, the Drama prize was not awarded in the first year.
