Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, popularly known as Babasaheb, was a jurist, economist, social reformer, and the principal architect of the Constitution of India. His life was a monumental struggle against the oppressive caste hierarchy, transforming him from a victim of untouchability into a global icon of civil rights.
Early Life and the Sting of Casteism
Born on April 14, 1891, in the military cantonment of Mhow (now in Madhya Pradesh), Bhimrao was the 14th child of Ramji Maloji Sakpal and Bhimabai Sakpal. His family belonged to the Mahar caste, which was treated as “untouchable” by the contemporary Hindu society.
His father served as a Subedar in the British Indian Army, which allowed Bhimrao access to a basic education that many of his peers were denied. However, the school environment was a crucible of humiliation. Young Bhimrao was forced to sit on a gunny sack outside the classroom to avoid “polluting” the upper-caste students. He was not allowed to touch the water tap; the school peon would pour water from a height—a memory he later immortalized in his autobiographical notes titled No Rights, No Cup of Water.
Academic Brilliance and Global Education
Despite the social barriers, Bhimrao’s intellect was undeniable. He became the first Mahar to pass the matriculation exam in 1907. Impressed by his potential, the Sayajirao Gaekwad III, Maharaja of Baroda, provided him with a scholarship for higher studies.
His academic journey was unprecedented for an Indian of that era:
- Elphinstone College, Mumbai: Graduation in Economics and Political Science.
- Columbia University, USA: He earned an MA and a PhD in Economics.
- London School of Economics (LSE): He completed a D.Sc. (Doctor of Science) in Economics.
- Gray’s Inn, London: He was called to the Bar, becoming a Barrister-at-law.
Social Movements and the Crusade Against Untouchability
Returning to India, Ambedkar realized that academic degrees did not shield him from stigma. He dedicated his life to the annihilation of caste.
- Mahad Satyagraha (1927): He led a non-violent protest to assert the right of untouchables to draw water from the Chawdar Tank in Mahad. During this movement, he ceremonially burned the Manusmriti, symbolizing the rejection of ancient texts that justified caste discrimination.
- Kalaram Temple Entry (1930): He launched a movement to allow Dalits entry into the Kalaram Temple in Nasik, emphasizing social equality over religious ritual.
- Bahishkrit Hitakarini Sabha: Founded in 1924, this organization aimed to promote education and socio-economic upliftment among the “depressed classes.”
Political Milestones: Pune Pact
Ambedkar’s role in the three Round Table Conferences (1930–32) was pivotal. He demanded separate electorates for Dalits, which was granted by the British via the Communal Award. However, Mahatma Gandhi protested this with a “fast unto death,” fearing it would permanently divide the Hindu community. This led to the Poona Pact (1932), where Ambedkar reluctantly gave up separate electorates in exchange for reserved seats for the depressed classes in provincial legislatures.
Right to Vote
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar was one of the strongest advocates for Universal Adult Franchise (the right of every adult citizen to vote) in India. At a time when many leaders believed voting should be restricted based on literacy or property ownership, Ambedkar argued that the right to vote was a fundamental tool for the self-defense of the marginalized.
The Architect of the Constitution
Following India’s independence, Ambedkar was appointed as the Chairman of the Drafting Committee of the Constitution. He meticulously wove the principles of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity into the document. He was the force behind Article 17, which legally abolished untouchability, and ensured robust fundamental rights to protect minorities and the marginalized.
The Hindu Code Bill and Final Years
As India’s first Law Minister, he introduced the Hindu Code Bill, seeking to give women the right to inherit property and the right to divorce. When the Parliament stalled the bill due to orthodox opposition, Ambedkar resigned from the cabinet in 1951, proving his commitment to gender equality.
Dr. Ambedkar and RBI
Few realize that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was conceptualized based on the guidelines presented by Ambedkar to the Hilton Young Commission. His book, The Problem of the Rupee – Its Origin and Its Solution, served as the foundational text for the central bank’s creation.
