Abel Prize often called as Nobel Prize of Mathematics

The Abel Prize (often phonetically referred to as the “Able” award) is one of the most prestigious honors in the world of mathematics. Often described as the “Nobel Prize of Mathematics,” it recognizes contributions of extraordinary depth and influence to the mathematical sciences.

The Abel Prize: An Overview

The prize was established by the Government of Norway in 2002 to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of the great Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel. It is awarded annually by the King of Norway to one or more outstanding mathematicians. The prize includes a monetary award of 7.5 million Norwegian kroner (approximately $700,000 USD).

The Persons Behind the Prize: Niels Henrik Abel

Niels Henrik Abel (1802–1829) was a brilliant Norwegian mathematician who made pioneering contributions despite living a life of extreme poverty and dying at the age of 26 from tuberculosis.

Key Contributions: He proved the impossibility of solving the general quintic equation (equations of the fifth degree) by radicals. He also did foundational work on elliptic functions and abelian integrals.

Legacy: His name is immortalized in terms like Abelian groups and Abelian varieties.

Sophus Lie

While the prize was officially established in 2002, the idea was first proposed in 1899 by the Norwegian mathematician Sophus Lie. He suggested the award when he learned that Alfred Nobel’s plans for annual prizes did not include mathematics. However, the death of Lie and the dissolution of the union between Norway and Sweden delayed the prize for over a century.

The First Recipient

Jean-Pierre Serre (2003) The inaugural Abel Prize was awarded to French mathematician Jean-Pierre Serre.

Why he won: He was recognized for playing a key role in shaping the modern form of many parts of mathematics, including topology, algebraic geometry, and number theory.

Path-breaking status: Serre is also the youngest-ever recipient of the Fields Medal (at age 27), making him one of the few individuals to hold both major honors.

Recipients with Path-Breaking Contributions

While every Abel laureate has made significant impacts, certain winners are noted for solving “unsolvable” problems or bridging vast fields:

Sir Andrew Wiles (2016): Famous for his stunning proof of Fermat’s Last Theorem, a problem that had remained unsolved for over 300 years. His work opened entirely new directions in number theory.

R. Srinivasa Varadhan (2007): An Indian-American mathematician recognized for his fundamental contributions to probability theory and in particular for creating a unified theory of large deviations.

John Forbes Nash Jr. (2015): Known popularly through the book and film A Beautiful Mind. He received the prize (shared with Louis Nirenberg) for his work on partial differential equations, which are essential for describing physical phenomena from fluid dynamics to heat transfer.

Karen Uhlenbeck (2019): She made history as the first woman to receive the Abel Prize. She was honored for her fundamental work in geometric analysis and gauge theory, which has profoundly changed the landscape of mathematics and physics.
